Architectural Design is an extremely important component to your project. It is what brings your vision to life and creates the plans from which your builder will work. The plans that are produced ensure that everything flows correctly, is structurally sound and adheres to building codes. Your initial consultation may be a bit intimidating. You’ll need to figure out exactly how to communicate your wants, needs, budget, style preferences, and your inner vision. This will take considerable preparation on your part.
Here are a few tips to consider as you get ready for your initial consultation:
Have Your Ideas Organized and Ready to Go!
Before we meet, spend some time thinking about what your priorities are for your project. Many clients with whom we’ve worked have a flash drive, digital folder or some other such file (Pinterest, Dropbox, etc.) which includes all of the images and ideas that inspire them. Regardless of whether it’s new construction, an addition or a remodel, going to be drawn to certain elements, design style and layouts. Collect and save them to present during that first meeting. Our job is to get a general sense of “you” and your overall tastes.
Seek Input – We Know Stuff!
We have experience when it comes to drawing workable, fluid plans. Initially, many people have a single minded view of their project, and that view is most definitely important. However, you don’t want to have such tunnel vision and not consider the advice and insights offered by your design professional. We can offer some great tips on everything from optimal window placement, to the number of lights needed, to potential furniture layout.
Be Upfront About Your Budget
We may have some terrific ideas, but if these don’t fall within your budget, then it’s simply a waste of time. The more forthcoming you are about your budget and where you’d like to end up once completed, the easier and more effective the meeting will be. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to stay within your budget, so don’t hesitate to ask for alternative solutions if something seems a bit pricey in regard to the project.
Ask Questions – We Won’t Bite!
People often shy from asking very pertinent questions because they’re either too nervous or perhaps hesitant about asking, “silly” questions. We want you to feel comfortable knowing you can ask us anything and get clarification whenever you don’t understand something. We will walk you through the process and the plans so that you come away from the meeting feeling better informed about your project.
We understand that you might still have questions about your consultation. Below are some common questions and answers clients have that we hope will help.
What Does The Consultation Cost?
We offer an initial consultation free of charge. Afterwards, you might incur additional consulting fees depending on the research or planning we must do before beginning your project. However, this would only be assessed after the initial consultation meeting and disclosed in your estimate sent for your approval. If your project is complex and requires additional research, you may need to set up an additional meeting to discuss the details.
What Is The Next Step Following the Consultation?
After your consultation, we will issue an estimate for the cost of our services. Once accepted, we will send over a contract for signature and your invoice to retain our services (the deposit).
What Happens If We Are Not A Good Fit?
Many clients worry about selecting a designer that isn’t suitable for their project. Similarly, we use the initial consultation as a means to build a rapport for the work that lies ahead. You can trust that we will be upfront and honest with you if we feel we’re not a good fit for your project. Additionally, we may refer to someone in our network that is a better match for your vision.
How Long Will It Take For An Estimate and Contract?
This question depends on your project’s complexity and our availability. At the end of your consultation, we will inform you of how long it should take to receive an estimate to review. We generally are comfortable issuing an estimate shortly following the consultation meeting as long as no additional research is needed.
